Al Mustapha is Innocent ~ Femi Fani Kayode

Follow @NaijaTalkative

As far as I am concerned, based on the evidence that was adduced in court, this man had absolutely nothing to do with the killing of Kudirat Abiola When I heard that Major Hamza Al Mustapha was convicted of murder and sentenced to hanging by a Lagos High Court yesterday afternoon I was utterly shocked, saddened and disgusted. And let me tell you why. I was one of those that opposed the late General Sani Abacha's government and fought against Al Mustapha and co. with every fibre of my being during the NADECO days. Given that, if anything, I should have been rejoicing with the many other NADECO leaders, supporters and stalwarts who honestly believe that Al-Mustapha actually ordered the death of our wonderful heroine Alhaja Kudirat Abiola and who believe that he deserves to die as a consequence of it. However I am not rejoicing with them simply because as far as I am concerned, based on the evidence that was adduced in court, this man had absolutely nothing to do with the killing of Kudirat Abiola. I believe that whatever we do we must always operate within the law and there is no place for the expression of unfettered emotions, vendetta or jungle justice in a civilised country when it comes to the administration of justice. I have been following this case closely for the last four years and I have publicly called for the release of Al Mustapha on a number of occasions simply because I found it shameful and unjust that the state could lock up a man in a dungeon for 13 years without being able to prove a case against him. By doing that, they have already almost ruined his life yet there is a presumption of innocence in our law. Now the state has gone even a step further in this whole unsavoury and disgraceful episode and they have convicted a man to hang for something that he knew nothing about simply because they want to silence him and stop him from exposing the truth about the role that many of the high and mighty played in the death of Abacha, MKO Abiola and many others. They want to jail and kill Mustapha just as they have jailed and killed so many other innocent men that came before him. Let me make this clear- I hold no brief and I have no sympathy whatsoever for the Abacha government that Al-Mustapha served and neither do I seek to defend their actions whilst in office. The truth is that they committed many atrocities and till today many find it hard to forgive them for those atrocities. Many of our people in the south-west were killed, locked up and driven into exile by that government as was the late General Shehu Musa Yar'adua and many others from other parts of Nigeria. I myself had to leave the country and go into exile in Ghana in 1996 because of them and I never thought that I would ever return to Nigeria again. Yet, despite all that, I cannot allow my bitterness and anger with the Abacha regime to becloud my reasoning and sense of justice that I would support or applaud a case of what would essentially be judicial murder. Yes Abacha's government and even Mustapha himself, as a consequence of his unflinching loyalty to his boss, committed atrocities and violated the rights of many but does that mean that we should do the same to them? Do two wrongs make a right? Are we all to descend into the pit of slaying the innocent and punishing their families simply because we must have our pound of flesh and even where there is no tangible evidence to justify such a course of action? I challenge those that doubt me to look at the evidence and to study the judgement closely as I have done. It is wickedness and it is a travesty of justice. Worse still it sends the wrong signal to an already tense nation that is fraught with regional, north/south and christian/ muslim tensions. This absurd judgement could not have come at a worse time and I have little doubt that the Boko Haramites amongs us (whether it be the overt or covert ones) will make quite a song and dance of it. Thankfully Al Mustapha has the right to appeal but the implication of that is that this man's enemies have virtually destroyed his life already and left him with no hope because, unless he is granted bail pending that appeal, he will be struggling with it from the dingy dungeons of Kirikiri prison all the way to the Supreme Court for the next ten years. That is the Nigerian state and ''system'' for you. When you are loyal to your leader, when you speak out in his defence, when you defend him with your life and when you tell the world the truth they come at you with everything that they have got and seek to jail or kill you....

What could have been another Boko Haram tragic incident this year, was averted over the weekend, by staff of a private security firm, Encouragers Security company Limited, thwarted attempt by a female suicide bomber, suspected member of the deadly Islamic sect, Boko Haram from gaining entrance into the complex of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) with explosives.

Al Mustapha's death sentence is long overdue - Hafsat Abiola Costello

Follow @NaijaTalkative

Mrs. Hafsat Abiola-Costello, daughter of the deceased Alh. Kudirat Abiola, has responded to the death sentence ruling handed down to Major Hamza Al-Mustapha who was accused of ordering her death. She described the sentence as a judgement for Nigerians and said it was long overdue. Al-Mustapha, as well as Lateef Sofolahan were sentenced to death by hanging having been convicted of the murder of Mrs. Abiola, wife of Chief Moshood Abiola, widely believed to have won the 12 June 1993 Presidential elections. She'd been assassinated along the Lagos/Ibadan express way on 4 June 1996. Al-Mustapha, the former Chief Security Officer to the late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, as well Lateef Sofolahan, the protocol officer for the deceased who was accused of divulging details of Mrs. Abiola's whereabouts on the day of her murder, have both been embroiled in a 12-year-long trial. It came to an end today when Justice Mojisola Dada in a Lagos High Court today sentenced both men to death. Hafsat Abiola says the judgement has further confirmed the judiciary in the country as the last hope of the Nigerian masses. Speaking to Channels Television in Abeokuta, she said there had been "no doubt" of Al-Mustapha's involvment in her mother's killing, adding that it brings some closure to the family still greiving the loss. Mrs. Costello says that life without the late Kudirat Abiola has been difficult, but adds that the family finds solace in the fact that she died in the struggle for the emancipation of the people.

The exit of Night of a Thousand Laughs

Follow @NaijaTalkative

WTF? Nigeria's Leading Comedy Show- Night of a Thousand Laughs will no longer be staged nor shot again.
The show which has been run for 16 years was reported to be no more.
Below are quotes from the show's director- Opa Williams giving reasons for stopping the running of Night of a Thousand Laughs:

“When we started Nite of A Thousand Laughs in 1995, we were the only comedy show, we were the real, and Nigerians witnessed something fresh and unique. Jokes were original and audience actually laughed a ‘thousand’ times. Consequently, the show produced superstar comedians who got their first break on the stage of Nite of A Thousand Laughs. These comedians went ahead to start their own shows. These shows became clones of Nite of A Thousand Laughs. It turned out to be a ‘see one, see all shows’. “The fallout is that the audience paid dearly for this as they are short changed without knowing it. As a pioneer, in fact the arrow head of the comedy revolution in Nigeria, I decided I won’t be part of short-changing the audience. So, Nite of A Thousand Laughs is stepping aside, to retain its dignity” -Opa Williams

I will miss this fantastic comedy show!

Alarming! President Jonathan One-Sidedly increased fuel price to N97

Below is a speech meant to be broadcast by President Goodluck Jonathan today (Monday 16 of January, 2012 by 7AM).

  1. This is the second time in two weeks I will address you on the deregulation of the downstream petroleum sector. In the last seven days, the nation has witnessed a disruption of economic activities. Although, the economic imperatives for the policy have been well articulated by government, the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) went ahead to declare a nationwide strike.
  2. There was also near-breakdown of law and order in certain parts of the country as a result of the activities of some persons or groups of persons who took advantage of the situation to further their narrow interests by engaging in acts of intimidation, harassment and outright subversion of the Nigerian state. I express my sympathy to those who were adversely affected by the protests.
  3. At the inception of the deregulation policy, Government had set up the Justice Alfa Belgore Committee to liaise with Labour and other stakeholders to address likely grey areas in the policy, but despite all our efforts, Labour refused the option of dialogue and also disobeyed a restraining order of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria.
  4. However, following the intervention of the Leadership of the National Assembly, and other well- meaning Nigerians, Labour accepted to meet with government, but this yielded no tangible result.
  5. It has become clear to government and all well-meaning Nigerians that other interests beyond the implementation of the deregulation policy have hijacked the protest. This has prevented an objective assessment and consideration of all the contending issues for which dialogue was initiated by government. These same interests seek to promote discord, anarchy, and insecurity to the detriment of public peace.
  6. Government appreciates that the implementation of the deregulation policy would cause initial hardships and commends Nigerians who have put forth suggestions and credible alternatives in this regard. Government also salutes Nigerians who by and large, conducted themselves peacefully while expressing their grievances. Let me assure you that government will continue to respect the people's right to express themselves within the confines of the law and in accordance with the dictates of our democratic space.
  7. Government will continue to pursue full deregulation of the downstream petroleum sector. However, given the hardships being suffered by Nigerians, and after due consideration and consultations with state governors and the leadership of the National Assembly, government has approved the reduction of the pump price of petrol to N97 per litre. The Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA) has been directed to ensure compliance with this new pump price.
  8. Government is working hard to reduce recurrent expenditure in line with current realities and to cut down on the cost of governance. In the meantime, government has commenced the implementation of the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment projects: including the Federal Government- assisted mass transit programme which is already in place, and job creation for the youth.
  9. Furthermore, the legal and regulatory regime for the petroleum industry will be reviewed to address accountability issues and current lapses in the Industry. In this regard, the Petroleum Industry Bill will be given accelerated attention. The report of the forensic audit carried out on the NNPC is being studied with a view to implementing the recommendations and sanctioning proven acts of corruption in the industry.
  10. Let me assure Nigerians that this administration is irrevocably committed to tackling corruption in the petroleum industry as well as other sectors of the economy. Consequently, all those found to have contributed one way or the other to the economic adversity of the country will be dealt with in accordance with the law
  11. My dear compatriots, I urge you to show understanding for the imperatives of the adjustment in the pump price of petrol and give government your full support to ensure its successful implementation. I further appeal to Nigerians to go back to work and go about their normal duties as government has made adequate arrangements for the protection of life and property throughout the federation.
  12. Government will not condone brazen acts of criminality and subversion. As President, I have sworn to uphold the unity, peace and order of the Nigerian State and by the grace of God, I intend to fully and effectively discharge that responsibility. Let me add that we are desirous of further engagements with Labour. I urge our Labour leaders to call off their strike, and go back to work.
  13. Nigeria belongs to all of us and we must collectively safeguard its unity.
  14. Thank you. God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria. GOODLUCK EBELE JONATHAN, GCFR President, Federal Republic of Nigeria.

It was suprising as faithful muslims acted as they promised the christians.
A group of devoted muslims visited a Cherubim and Seraphim church in Kano State. They said they visited so as to help protect the church from attacks mostly from the Boko Haram group.
Pictures below shows some of the muslims who visited the church today in the church service.
The Muslims promised Christians that they'll be of help in preventing any form of attacks as churches have been attacked and innocent people have been killed lately.

A Nigerian scientist has discovered a
new disease: GEJ SYNDROME. According to the
Professor, recent medical findings published in the
Harvard Medical Journal 2012, suggest that children
who grow up without shoes may develop a
syndrome called Subsidophobia! It is a rare medical condition which may be compounded by marrying
an educated illiterate. This may degenerate into
egocentrism and megalomania. Parents are advised
to make all sacrifices necessary to buy shoes for their

How Jonathan deceived Nollywood with $200 Million- Clarion Chukwurah

Follow @NaijaTalkative

Popular Nollywood Actress, Clarion Chukwurah criticised President Goodluck Jonathan over his unfulfilled promise to Nollywood Industry.
She stated that the President promised the Nollywood and Entertainment Industry a sum of $200 million to give him support throughout his regime.
She then added that nobody in the Industry can boastfuly say he/she has received a dime from the money which was promised. It was a deceit! She said.

The actress who supported the masses during the protest against removal of fuel subsidy said:
President Jonathan had announced a donation of $200 million to the entertainment industry during a meeting with the stakeholders in the industry. He described this as a direct intervention lifeline for the exclusive purpose of supporting artist and developing the entertainment industry.

After the Announcement, he received acclamations from Actors, Actresses and Musicians whom now later released songs for his campaign and claimed him as their candidate publicly.
She said the President announced the huge sum of money for the entertainment industry as “a bait to get us all to endorse him for the election and sell our fans to him,” since the President believes that with such endorsement, their fans would do same.
The President is like other politicians who promise and fail. She concluded.

I guess the #OccupyNigeria Protest against removal of Fuel Subsidy is digging out some untold and unknown truth/fact in the country.

FG agrees to return fuel price to N65 under conditions

Follow @NaijaTalkative

It appears that the current Nationwide Strike might end well for Labour and Nigerians.
After the meeting that commenced yesterday with the Federal Government and Labour, the Federal Government agreed to revert the price of petrol back to N65 temporarily.
The meeting was inclusive of the Mr President, Senate house, house of Labour which was organised by labour. It turned out that labour was given two options for reversing the action on removal of fuel subsidy.
The options given to labour to decide on are:
  1. First Option is that the Govt would Revert to the pre-New Year price on the condition that the subsidy regime would be completely removed in April.
  2. To allow the N65 selling price of petrol and withdraw 80% of the subsidy in March, meaning that petrol would sell for N120 if the current price regime remains in force.

According to labour, there's no agreement yet!
Although compromise was made but the strike continues- Labour.
Therefore, another meeting will commence on Saturday 14th of January, 2012 by which a decision would be made.

Happy Strike Regime! Lol.

Boko Haram leader explains why they attack Christians

Follow @NaijaTalkative

BOKO Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau said the sect would not be defeated by the security forces. The leader of Boko Haram also defended recent attacks on Christians, saying they were revenge for killings of Muslims. In his first video message, posted on YouTube, Shekau referred to attacks on Muslims in recent years in several parts of northern Nigeria. Boko Haram militants attacked several churches on Christmas Day, killing dozens of worshippers. This has led to some reprisals in the mainly Christian South. Mosques in two states have been attacked. Thousands of people have fled their homes following the recent attacks, leading some people, including Nigeria's president and the leader of the country's main Christian organisation, to make comparisons with the 1967-70 civil war when leaders of the Igbo ethnic group tried to secede. In the 15-minute video, Mr Shekau, wearing a red and white turban, a bulletproof vest and sitting in front of two Kalashnikov rifles, said he was respondingto recent statements from President Goodluck Jonathan and the leader of the country's main Christian organisation, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN). He warned President Jonathan that Nigeria's security forces would not be able to defeat the group. President Jonathan has declared a state of emergency in some northern states but the attacks have continued. On Tuesday night, gunmen opened fire on a bar in Yobe, killing eight people, including several police officers. The president recently said that he suspected some officials, politicians and members of the security forces for being sympathisers of Boko Haram. Defending the latest spate of violence, Mr Shekau referred to the killing of Muslims in places like Jos, Kaduna, Zango Kataf and Tafawa Balewa in recent years. Some of these places have seen bitter communal clashes but they are often based on long-standing disputes over resources such as land, or are whipped up by politicians, rather than being based on religious differences. "We are also at war with Christians because the whole world knows what they did to us," Mr Shekau said in the video, speaking in Hausa. CAN head, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, had said on Saturday that his members would protect themselves against the attacks, which he said suggested "systematic ethnic and religious cleansing.” On Tuesday, he told the BBC World Service that there should be dialogue with Muslim leaders to halt the violence. Mr Shekau said the group could only hold talks with the government in accordance with the teachings of Islam. He said the group's primary targets remained the security forces, who he saidhad summarily executed their former leader, Mohammed Yusuf, after he was arrested in 2009. "Everyone has seen how we were treated. People have seen what has happened between us and armed security agents and their accomplices who give them information about us,” Mr Shekau said. After a lull, in 2010 the group started to stage drive-by shootings on government targets in its base. Last year, it carried out suicide bombings on high-profile targets, such as the headquarters of the UN and the police in the capital, Abuja. The group wants to establish Sharia law in Nigeria. Meanwhile, worried about the incessant killings of innocent citizens in the country by Boko Haram through bomb explosions, the Senate, on Wednesday, asked the Federal Government to go after and deal immediately with their sponsors. The senators said they were prepared to give their lives for peace to reign in the country.

DPO Arrested for killing a Protester in Lagos

Follow @NaijaTalkative

As the Nationwide strike which was led by labour continue to turn bloody, so many tragic occurrences are also happening.
The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Pen Cinema Police Station, Agege Lagos- Mr Segun Olubunmi shot dead a protester along Ogba road.
It was a very devastating story as the DPO gave unreasonable reasons for killing the protester. The dead Protester- Ademola Aderinde was known to be a resident of Thomas Salako, Ogba, Lagos and was killed at Yaya Abatan Junction, Ogba. The DPO also injured 4 people with gunshots at the scene.

Reports say; The DPO stormed the area in a patrol pick up van and shot innocent persons.
He gave his action reasons that:
They had blocked the road with tyres to play football on the empty street following the total support to the strike called by labour leaders.

Ademola, who was shot on the thigh, died on the spot, while the other persons were taken to nearby County Hospital for treatment of their injuries.

Samuel said when they heard gunshots, they were running away from the scene when they were hit by bullets.

The DPO has been arrested and disarmed and will be charged for murder after
preliminary investigations on the orders of the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Yakubu Alkali.
The DPO was immediately handed over to the Homicide Division of the State’s Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, Yaba, Lagos.

Alkali said: “I did not send him or others to kill innocent Nigerians and since he has flagrantly disobeyed, he has to face the law.”

Ademola's death triggered the anger of other protesters which led them to carry the his corpse to Pen Cinema Police Station along with war songs.

Jonathan's Full Transcript on Fuel Subsidy (3)

Follow @NaijaTalkative

  1. Fellow Nigerians, I know that the removal of the petroleum subsidy imposes an initial burden on our people, especially the rising cost of transportation. Government will be vigilant and act decisively to curb the excesses of those that want to exploit the current situation for selfish gains. I plead for the understanding of all Nigerians. I appeal to our youth not to allow mischief-makers to exploit present circumstances to mislead or incite them to disturb public peace.
  2. To address the immediate challenges that have been identified, I have directed all Ministries, Departments and Agencies of government to embark immediately on all projects which have been designed to cushion the impact of the subsidy removal in the short, medium and long-term, as outlined in the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme Document.
  3. Tomorrow, 8th January, I will formally launch a robust mass transit intervention programme to bring down the cost of transportation across the country. The programme will be implemented in partnership with state and local governments, labour unions, transport owners, and banking institutions, and supported with the provision of funding at zero interest rate as well as import duty waiver on all needed parts for locally-made mass transit vehicles, which will create additional jobs in the economy.
  4. We will keep these incentives in place for as long as it takes. I want to assure you that Government will not rest until we bring down the cost of transportation for our people. Let me thank the transporters’ associations that have agreed to reduce transport fares. I have directed the Minister of Labour and Productivity to work with these associations to come up with a sustainable plan to guarantee this within the shortest possible time.
  5. In addition, I have ordered the mobilization of contractors for the full rehabilitation of the Port Harcourt –Maiduguri Railway Line and the completion of the Lagos-Kano Railway Line. I have also directed the immediate commencement of a Public Works programme that will engage the services of about 10, 000 youths in every state of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory. This will create an additional 370, 000 jobs.
  6. Government has taken these decisions in the best interest of our economy, so that we not only have benefits today, but to ensure that we bequeath even greater benefits to our children and grandchildren.
  7. Let me assure Nigerians that every possible effort will be made to ensure that we march forward, with a collective resolve to build a Nigeria that can generate greater economic growth, create and sustain new jobs, and secure the future of our children.
  8. This Administration will aggressively implement its programme to reposition and strengthen our economy, while paying adequate attention to the immediate needs of our citizens.
  9. I assure you all that we will work towards achieving full domestic refining of petroleum products with the attendant benefits.
  10. As I ask for the full understanding of all Nigerians, I also promise that I will keep my word.
  11. Thank you. May God bless you; and may God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
