What would you do if you had to choose between having cancer or having a chest?
Suppose you're 54 years old and you suddenly find out that a cancerous bone tumor known as a chest wall sarcoma has devoured your sternum and part of your ribcage.

For all of the remarkable advancements that have been made in the fight against cancer, there's not much that can be done in a case like this. By removing the infected tissue, you're pretty much left without any upper torso skeletal support.

That may have worked for one of my favorite obscure X-Men characters, but it presents some issues in the real world.

There's one other option. And even though it sounds like something out of science fiction, it actually works.
A man in Salamanca, Spain, has received the world's first 3D-printed titanium chest implant. Which is kind of like this:

With help from Anatomics, a Melbourne-based company that specializes in innovative medical devices, surgeons used a series of high-resolution CT scans of the patient's chest in an attempt to recreate his existing bone structure.

This also allowed better planning for the actual surgery; the doctors knew ahead of time exactly where the pieces would go and exactly how they'd fit, which, er, meant a lot less time spent diggin' around in the poor guy's open chest cavity (which is always good news).

The implant was then 3D-printed by an Australian company called CSIRO using a high-powered electron beam to melt down the powdered titanium into a more malleable material (so don't get too excited about the prospect of 3D-printing an army of metal skeletons on your little consumer-grade MakerBot — not yet, anyway).

Chest implants and 3D-printed parts separately are nothing new. But bringing them together? That's pretty cool.
In the past, reconstructive surgery for the chest wall has relied on flat metal plates and screws. It's an imperfect process that's not really known for its longevity (though it's certainly better than nothing).

But by using 3D modeling to recreate the complicated geometries of the patient's unique ribcage and sternum, this particular process turned out to be much safer and more reliable. As José Aranda, a doctor on the surgical team, explained in a press release, "Thanks to 3D printing technology and a unique resection template, we were able to create a body part that was fully customised and fitted like a glove."

And so far things are looking good — the patient was discharged 12 days after the surgery and is well on his way to recovery, shiny metal ribs and all (or at least, I'm assuming it's still shiny — you can't really see it, ya know?).

Maybe we can't stop cancer from ever happening. But it's still nice to know the future's on our side.
When we think of 3D-printed titanium bones, we're probably thinking more about some post-apocalyptic movie like "The Terminator" than we are about the actual real-world applications of this incredible technology.

BSU MEDICAL STUDENT DIDN’T COMMIT SUICIDE - FAMILY

Good day dear friends,

Many of you must have read the story of the Benue State University medical student that reportedly committed suicide. As usual, after verification of facts, I am out to set the record straight.

The family of the late medical student has released an official statement that their son did not commit suicide. He was driving on Abu King Shuluwa Road, moving at a pretty high speed and without knowledge of a truck spoilt in the middle of the road. He tried to swerve out of the truck’s way but found himself facing the road divider. Without his belt on, Mr Idoko was flunged out of the car, sustained multiple fractures, a cracked skull and died on the spot. The car also hit and killed another commuter on the road while spinning out of control.

From where I’m sitting the above statement alone disqualifies it as a suicide, at least technically. It was an accident and another person’s life was also taken in the process. Nothing deliberate, no matter the circumstance confronting Nicholas before his death.

The story above is widely different from what lindaikeji.blogspot.com and every other national daily that lifted the story from her site carried as news. It is disappointing to say the least looking at what passes for national journalism these days. Sites like of lindaikeji.blogspot.com have huge readership and gulp up tons of ad revenue it is only fair that they work for their money.

The story wasn’t just wrong, it was disrespectful and poorly researched. The deceased’s name was wrongly reported by Linda Ikeji which cited benue.com.ng  as its source even though benue.com.ng got the name right, one wonders where the false name was manufactured from. His death has not been declared a suicide by the authorities or his family as many other national dailies would have us believe.

I am not going to speak against plagiarism and the other numerous crimes we commit in the name of journalism without one iota of care to the consequences, at least not today. But when one of such consequences is spreading total falsehood about the life of a young man, even threatening to denigrate the image of his entire family it is time to put a stop to such lazy practices.

Shocking: Bill Cosby admits drugging women in 2005 (READ)

Bill Cosby admitted in 2005 that he secured quaaludes with the intent of giving them to young women he wanted to have sex with and that he gave the sedative to at least one woman and other people, according to documents obtained Monday by The Associated Press.

Cosby’s lawyers insisted that two of the accusers knew they were taking quaaludes from the comedian, according to the unsealed documents. Nevertheless, attorneys for some of the numerous women suing Cosby seized on the testimony as powerful corroboration of what they have been saying all along: that he drugged and raped women. 

The AP had gone to court to compel the release of a deposition in a sexual-abuse case filed by former Temple University employee Andrea Constand, the first of a cascade of lawsuits against him that have severely damaged his good-guy image. Cosby’s lawyers had objected to the release of the material, arguing it would embarrass him. Ultimately, a judge unsealed just a small portion of the deposition. “The stark contrast between Bill Cosby, the public moralist and Bill Cosby, the subject of serious allegations concerning improper (and perhaps criminal) conduct is a matter as to which the AP — and by extension the public — has a significant interest,” U.S. District Judge Eduardo Robreno wrote. 

Cosby, with his oft-espoused views on topics including childrearing, family life, education and crime, “has voluntarily narrowed the zone of privacy that he is entitled to claim,” the judge wrote. Cosby, who starred as Dr. Cliff Huxtable on “The Cosby Show” from 1984 to 1992, settled Constand’s lawsuit under confidential terms in 2006. His lawyers in the Philadelphia case did not immediately return telephone calls seeking comment on Monday. Constand consented to be identified but did not want to comment, her lawyer said. “This evidence shows a pattern in which defendant ‘mentored’ naive young women and introduced drugs into the relationship, with and without the woman’s knowledge, in order for him to achieve sexual satisfaction,” Constand’s lawyer, Dolores M. Troiani, argued in court papers. 

Cosby, 77, has been accused by more than two dozen women of sexual misconduct in episodes dating back more than four decades. Cosby has never been charged with a crime, and the statute of limitations on most of the accusations has expired. “If today’s report is true, Mr. Cosby admitted under oath 10 years ago sedating women for sexual purposes,” said Lisa Bloom, attorney for model Janice Dickinson, who says she was drugged and raped. “Given that, how dare he publicly vilify Ms. Dickinson and accuse her of lying when she tells a very similar story?” Celebrity attorney Gloria Allred, who is representing several women, said she hopes to use the admission in court cases against the comedian. Cosby, giving sworn testimony in the lawsuit accusing him of sexual assaulting Constand at his home in Pennsylvania in 2004, said he obtained seven quaalude prescriptions in the 1970s. 

Constand’s lawyer asked if he had kept the sedatives through the 1990s, after they were banned, but was frustrated by objections from Cosby’s attorney. “When you got the quaaludes, was it in your mind that you were going to use these quaaludes for young women that you wanted to have sex with?” Troiani asked. “Yes,” Cosby answered. “Did you ever give any of these young women the quaaludes without their knowledge?” Troiani asked. Cosby’s lawyer again objected, leading Troiani to petition the federal judge to force Cosby to cooperate. Cosby later said he gave Constand three half-pills of Benadryl, although Troiani in the documents voices doubt that was the drug involved. 

Cosby had fought the AP’s efforts to unseal the testimony, with his lawyer arguing that the deposition could reveal details of Cosby’s marriage, sex life and prescription drug use. “It would be terribly embarrassing for this material to come out,” lawyer George M. Gowen III argued in June. He also said the material would “prejudice him in eyes of the jury pool in Massachusetts,” where Cosby is fighting defamation lawsuits brought by women who say his representatives smeared them by accusing them of lying. Robreno, the judge, had temporarily sealed some documents in the Constand lawsuit but never ruled on a final seal before the case was settled. 

Under federal court rules in Pennsylvania, documents must be unsealed after two years unless a party can show specific harm. The judge ruled that Cosby’s potential embarrassment was insufficient. Robreno asked last month why Cosby was fighting the release of his sworn testimony, given that the accusations in the Constand lawsuit were already public. “Why would he be embarrassed by his own version of the facts?” the judge said. Cosby resigned in December from the board of trustees at Temple, where he was the popular face of the Philadelphia school in advertisements, fundraising campaigns and commencement speeches. Lawyer Gayle Sproul, representing the AP, in court last month called the married Cosby “an icon” who “held himself out as someone who would guide the public in ways of morality.” Troiani, summarizing her evidence, painted a starkly different picture. 

Cosby “has evidenced a predilection for sexual contact with women who are unconscious or drugged. His victims are young, ‘star struck’ and totally trusting of his public persona,” Troiani argued. -

Surprisingly, Angie Houston recently told Ellis County News that she is expecting a baby pig as her first child. Houston alleges that one night she came home from a night of playing miniature golf and was pounced on and raped by a 400lb boar named Pete.

“People think I’m crazy and need mental help because of my story,” Houston said. “They ask how the pig would get my panties off to mount me.  I wasn’t wearing any panties is how! This pig been hot for me for years. Constantly sniffing at my genitals. He’s tried to rape me a hundred times. This is just the first time he successfully got inside me.” Angie’s father Don Houston who supports her claims said. “Angie knows she can’t have sex until she’s married and she promises she hasn’t.” 

“Pete’s always been an ornery pig, so it’s not surprising he raped our daughter. After this incident, I butchered Pete out.  The bacon I made him into is helping feed Angela and her baby; after all, she’s eating for two now and needs a lot of extra meat.” Angie reportedly has refused to see an obstetrician to check her and the baby’s health or get a sonogram to see what the potential “pig baby” might look like. “I just want to wait and be surprised by what my baby looks like,” Angie said. “My hope is that that it’s not a mutant pig of some kind and it just comes out looking like a normal human baby, which I feel, will be the case.”

Guy Bust Open Stomach To Remove Hard Drugs

The 25 year old Nigerian was smuggling drugs into Indonesia, and despite being discovered, he will not have to face execution as the drugs themselves did him in. The hard drugs he was smuggling out of Indonesia burst inside his stomach, causing his death.

According to Indonesian Police, Chukwuna had on Saturday May 30th lodged at a hotel close to the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport Indonesia possibly with the intent of flying out with the drugs inside him, when he suddenly ran out of the hotel on Sunday morning, screaming. Witnesses saw him run to the hotel car park like a lunatic, broke the glass of one of the cars and used it to cut himself as he tried to get the drug out of his system.

“Austin Chukwuna, 25, ran out of the Ibis Hotel near the airport compound where he had just stayed a night. He allegedly tore open his abdomen with pieces of glass,” Benda Police chief Comr. Heddi Managsi said.

The police chief said when they searched inside his hotel room, they found three methamphetamine capsules and another eight meth capsules on the highway. “We then took him in the ambulance, but he died on the way to Tangerang General Hospital,” he said.

Burnt Body Of 6 Year Old Girl Discovered By Police

The Sacramento County Crime Lab confirmed that the burned body of an infant discovered in a rural area about 100 miles from where she was last seen belonged to the missing child.

According to a statement by the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department, the 25-year-old boyfriend of Jadianna Larsen's mother was arrested on a murder charge early Saturday and is being held without bail in the girl's death.

The suspect, Juan Rivera, Jadianna's caretaker, who reported her missing on Thursday night, authorities said. Rivera, who is a registered drug offender according to authorities, is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday.

Sheriff's deputies, search-and-rescue teams and volunteers had been looking for the girl since then. Rivera told investigators before his arrest that he awoke to find Jadianna missing from her apartment after he experienced a medical emergency that had caused him to lose consciousness.

At the time of Jadianna’s disappearance, her mother – who has not been identified – was away undergoing medical treatment, Sacramento County Sheriff Department Sgt. Lisa Bowman told The Sacramento Bee. Bowman did not disclose the type of treatment but said the mother had been gone for a number of days and left Jadianna in Rivera’s care.

Mike Miner, who used to live at the Martin Luther King Jr. Village apartments in south Sacramento, where Jadianna’s mother and Rivera reside, said the mother was on disability and is in a rehabilitation program.

Cheetah Casborn, who identified herself as a friend of Jadianna’s mother, said if Rivera killed Jadianna, she could not understand why.

“He loved the little girl,” Casborn said. “She was calling him Daddy.”

Jadianna and her mother also would often walk to school together and she loved to draw pictures of horses, Miner said.

A makeshift memorial of balloons and teddy bears was set up Saturday near the apartment complex.

Jadianna’s body was discovered 10 hours before her reported disappearance by volunteer firefighters putting out a vegetation fire on a Glenn County road about 1 ½ miles west of the interstate that runs north from Sacramento, Sheriff Richard Warren told The Sacramento Bee.

The Glenn County coroner determined the body belonged to a girl between 5 and 10 years old. Investigators in Sacramento County were notified; a statement posted Saturday on the Sheriff’s Department website states the crime lab confirmed the child is Jadianna.

The sheriff's department said earlier that Jadianna had not been at school all week, but did not disclose if her absence was suspicious or had an explanation.

Student Jumped To His Death From 9th Floor In Yale University

A student of Yale University jumped to his death from the ninth floor of an off-campus apartment building on Tuesday morning, moments after stabbing a fellow student, according to Police reports.

The New Haven police said the events happened around 5:30 a.m. at an apartment complex across from the Yale campus.

Reports say the suspect fell six stories onto a third-floor terrace. His name is being withheld pending notification of his family.

The police say the stabbing victim, Alexander Michaud, is in stable condition at Yale-New Haven Hospital. Officials said the men were acquaintances and Yale students but released no other details.

Authorities in Newport News, Virginia, are investigating after a high school teacher allegedly showed teenage students before-and-after photos of her breast augmentation during class.

Melissa Kidd, 34, resigned from her job at Woodside High School on April 17 amid accusations that she'd shown three students, ages 16-18, "photos of her nude and exposed breasts" on her iPhone, according to police documents. The photos allegedly showed her breasts before and after she had enlargement surgery.

Kidd is being investigated on suspicion of taking indecent liberties on a minor by a person of supervisory role, which is a felony. She has not been charged with a crime, but the investigation is ongoing.

“To hear something like that is really disturbing," Angela Leslie, a parent, said. "To me that’s pornographic, it’s not OK. It’s not OK. I hope it’s not true."

The alleged incident occurred at the school in March while Kidd was teaching a class. When the school's administration caught wind of the allegations, they called the police. Cops interviewed the students and learned that Kidd may have shown the students more than just photos of her boob job.

"One juvenile victim additionally reported being shown nude photographs of Kidd’s breast and genital areas,” A.J. Cupp, a detective with the Newport News Police Department’s special victims unit, said in a police report.

Police executed a preliminary search on the teacher's phone in April, and filed an additional search warrant to obtain hidden, erased or password protected material earlier this month.

Kidd was a new teacher who held a provisional license. Before she resigned her position, she taught in Woodside High School's career and technical education department.

14 Year Old Girl Kill Mother
