Almost all (if not all) shops, banks, commercial offices are closed down due to the strike.
Clash of police and Protesters in Kano State (Nigeria) turns violence on Monday, 9th of January, 2011. The protest led to shootings from the police against the nationwide rally.

Here's a quote from a Red Cross official:

Seven of them have
gunshot wounds while the rest sustained
injuries from beating and falling down in the
confusion.”
