21st Century Fox Buys National Geographic For $725 Million

21st Century Fox takes control of all National Geographic TV channels, websites, magazines and all other media assets in a $725 million deal. The brand was previously owned by the non-profit National Geographic Society, who retain a 27% stake in the brand.

According to a National Geographic statement, “The new expanded joint venture will operate as National Geographic Partners and will combine the National Geographic television channels with National Geographic’s other media and consumer-oriented assets, including: National Geographic magazines; National Geographic Studios; related digital and social media platforms; books; maps; children’s media; and ancillary activities, including travel, location-based entertainment, archival sales, catalog, licensing and ecommerce businesses.”

National Geographic Partners will be jointly run by both 21st Century Fox and National Geographic Society, with National Geographic Society CEO Gary Knell set to be the first chairman.
