Anietie Okon — I’m waiting for President to fail

Former Akwa Ibom Senator, Anietie Okon has said that he is waiting for President Muhammadu Buhari to fail.Okon also accused Buhari of committing an impeachable offence with his style of governance. The former Senator made the comments during an interview with Vanguard. Excerpts below:

What is your view on the alleged skewed appointments so far made by President Muhammadu Buhari?
Well, you know that is directly in breach of the constitution. The President maybe, heard what I said recently in an interview that he has been operating as a sole administrator and there is no provision in the Constitution of this country for the business of governance to be conducted in that manner. The foundations demand a recognition of the differences that have ensured the emergence of a country and it is unacceptable where you fail to recognize the federal character of our make up as a country. This is not only condemnable but poses real danger for the future of this country.

So, what would you say generally of his first 100 days in office?
I have pointed out where there are fundamental breaches and failure in his approach to governance of this country. The cardinal points that ensure that this country remains one cohesive group, one cohesive nation are being threatened by the lopsidedness and cavalier approach to the appointments he is making into the federal system.

Given your position as a major stakeholder in the Nigerian project; what will be your advice to the President at this point in time?

I am waiting for him to fail but for the sake of the country; I hope not. I am waiting for him to continue to make mistakes so that we can find a window to begin to breathe the air properly and to rise up and create a viable alternative to the APC’s change mantra government. So, in a nutshell, President Buhari is operating in breach of the constitution, he is in breach of the Nigerian Constitution by the way and manner he is approaching governance and that is an impeachable offense.

NDDC board sues President Buhari

The sacked board members of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), led by Sen Bassey Ewa-Henshaw, have sued President Buhari for sacking them. The board through their counsel Mr Ebun-Olu Adegborowa, is contending the inclusion of the NDDC board in the circular ordering the dissolution of boards of federal parastatals, agencies, institutions. They board members dragged the President before the National Industrial Court. They said their tenure was supposed to last for four years-December 16, 2013 to December 15, 2017.

The board members say “By virtue of the NDDC Establishment Act, the Governing Board of the commission cannot be dissolved, either through the letters dated July 16, 2015, Ref. No. SGF.19/S.81/XIX/964 and July 23, 2015, Ref. No. SGF.55/S.2, respectively, or in any other manner that constitutes a violation of sections 2,3,5 and other extant provisions of the said NDDC Act.” They want the court to “Declare that the letters respectively, are ultra vires, ineffective and ineffectual to ground the dissolution of the 4th Governing Board of the NDDC and the same are invalid, null and void and of no effect whatsoever, in so far as they relate to the dissolution of the said Governing Board."

Also, they are demanding “An order forthwith re-instating the claimants as members of the 4th Governing Board of the NDDC in compliance with their respective letters of appointment and sections 2, 3, 5 and other extant provisions of the NDDC Establishment Act and to direct the second defendant to pay all allowances, benefits and perquisites to which the claimants are otherwise entitled.”

PDP - Buhari and Osinbajo's assets declaration is deceptive

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has faulted the assets declared by President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Thursday, September 3, saying its a mere "deceptive window-dressing to hoodwink unsuspecting Nigerians”

In a statement signed by PDP National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh on Friday, September 4, the President's statement in March, promising he would declare his assets publicly was recalled. It read, “I pledge to publicly declare my assets and liability and also encourage my political appointees to publicly declare their assets and liability." The party said Buhari and Osinbajo have failed to produce copies of their declarations, detailing the exact nature and value of respective assets. The statement reads,

“We have noted the release of a flimsy list of belongings of President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo by the Presidency, who want such to pass as the public declaration of assets as pledged by the President. “Nigerians are not deceived by this poor attempt at window-dressing designed by the Presidency to hoodwink the unsuspecting populace in a desperate bid to shore up its diminished image.

“We ask, is the resort to a mere list, instead of true copies of the declaration not a ploy to give the Presidency a window for denial in consonance with their widely observed inclination for flip flopping, backtracking and brazen denials of their statements and actions? “All we want is credibility, integrity and sincerity of purpose. We are not questioning how a President, who by December last year, declared that he had only N1 million in his account, could suddenly now list N30 million in the same bank account by May 29, and after an expensive campaign; we are not yet demanding the public declaration of his assets in his wife’s name.

“We are not even applauding the multiplication of his cows from 150 to 250 in a space of three months, arising from his dual and conflicting pronouncements on this issue“What the PDP and discerning Nigerians demand is for Mr. President to always stand by his words and pledge. “Mr. President, this is a mere list of your belongings and not public declaration of assets in fulfillment of your covenant with Nigerians”

Buhari and Osinbajo Publicly Declare Their a$$ets

Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari and his Vice, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, have (finally) declared their a$$ets. A statement by the Senior Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Garba Shehu said,

“The documents submitted to the CCB, which officials say are still being vetted and will soon be made public, show that prior to being sworn in on May 29, President Buhari had less than N30 million to his name. He also had only one bank account, with the Union Bank. President Buhari had no foreign account, no factory and no enterprises. He also had no registered company and no oil wells” The statement further added, “The Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo (SAN), who had been a successful lawyer before his foray into politics declared a bank balance of about N94 million and 900,000 United States Dollars in his bank accounts”.

Buhari and Osinbajo and their party, the All Progressives Congress have come under a lot of fire for not declaring their a$$ets which most insist was part of the President’s campaign policies while the party insisted that it was not. The revelation of the a$$ets also said that President Buhari “had shares in Berger Paints, Union Bank and Skye Bank”. The documents also revealed that “President Buhari had a total of five homes, and two mud houses in Daura. He had two homes in Kaduna, one each in Kano, Daura and in Abuja. One of the mud houses in Daura was inherited from his late older sister, another from his late father.

He borrowed money from the old Barclays Bank to build two of his homes. “President Buhari also has two undeveloped plots of land, one in Kano and the other in Port Harcourt. He is still trying to trace the location of the Port Harcourt land. “In addition to the homes in Daura, he has farms, an orchard and a ranch. The total number of his holdings in the farm include 270 heads of cattle, 25 sheep, five horses, a variety of birds and a number of economic trees”. Mr Garba revealed that the full documents will be revealed to the public soon as they are done being reviewed by the CCB.

Tinubu was Buhari tricked to get power back to the North - Afenifere chieftain says

Afenifere chieftain and Chairman of the defunct Presidential Advisory Committee on National Conference, Senator Femi Okunrounmu says President Buhari tricked former Lagos state governor, Bola Tinubu to get into power. In an interview with Punch, Okunrounmu said it was naive of Tinubu to think he would become a kingmaker immediately Buhari becomes President of Nigeria. "Tinubu’s story is like Afonja in Ilorin in 1817. Ilorin used to be under the Oyo Empire and was the headquarters of an Oyo General, Afonja. But Afonja rebelled against the empire and helped bring about its collapse with the assistance of the Fulani. Afonja was assisted by Shehu Alimi, who was a Fulani leader. In 1824 Afonja was assassinated and Alimi’s son became Emir and Ilorin became an emirate of the Sokoto Caliphate. It was naive of Tinubu to think that Buhari would just get power and he (Tinubu) would become the kingmaker of Nigeria. That is what Tinubu expected and that was why we kept reminding him of the Ilorin episode. We told him that once Buhari got power, he would turn around and just forget about him and implement a northern hegemonic agenda which Buhari is doing now. In 1960, the Sardauna of Sokoto, Ahmadu Bello, made a statement publicly that the northerners should regard Nigeria as their conquered territory and that they own Nigeria. He said the entire South-West and South-East should be regarded as conquered territory and that the North should never allow the South to govern. This statement was widely reported in the media. It was in the West African Pilot of October 12, 1960. The quote was boldly published. So, the keys to the chains of slavery we thought we could use to break free were just given back to the North by the APC. The APC became an agent of oppression and enslavement. We can all see that Buhari only tricked Tinubu to get power back to the North"he said

Igbo lawyer sues President Buhari over Appointments

A lawyer from Anambra State has sued President Muhammadu Buhari over his recent appointments which many believe show a bias towards Nigeria’s northern region.Marcel Dim-Udebuani filed the suit challenging Buhari’s appointments at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

A lawyer from Anambra State has sued President Muhammadu Buhari over his recent appointments which many believe show a bias towards Nigeria’s northern region.Marcel Dim-Udebuani filed the suit challenging Buhari’s appointments at the Federal High Court in Abuja. Dim-Udebuani is alleging before the court that the president’s appointments are in violation of Nigeria’s federal character principle. He based his suit on the grounds “that the Federal Republic of Nigeria is a country for all the citizens, South-East inclusive.” Buhari has appointed 25 officials since assuming office on May 29, 2015, but none of them is from the South-East. The plaintiff is therefore urging the court to compel Buhari “to reverse the appointments so far made to observe and comply with the principle of Federal Character as enshrined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended).”

The president has been severely criticized for his appointments which the Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC) has described as ‘totally unacceptable to Ndigbo’. PDP - Nigeria Economy worse In 90 days of APC

Below is a press statement from the PDP
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) decries as alarming, the damage so far done on the nation’s economy by the President Buhari-led All Progressives Congress (APC) since it took office at the center, three months ago. The party said the shambolic state of the nation’s economy within the period, which represents the worst in the nation’s contemporary history, is a direct fallout of uncertainty created by the inability of the Buhari-led government to chart a clear-cut economic policy, worsened by abuse of regulations, and flagrant violation of constitutional provisions.
