Follow @NaijaTalkative

TOWARDS forestalling the perennial high failure rate in chemistry in the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination, SSSCE, the Federal Government is set to introduce a brand new curriculum for the subject. The new curriculum which is being designed essentially to prepare a solid foundation for Chemistry and other science-oriented courses in tertiary institutions of learning in the country, will utilise the secondary school level as base line. Registrar/CEO of the Institute of Chartered Chemists of Nigeria, ICCON, Prince Jay Oghifo, who disclosed this, said the curriculum overhaul would cover the entire syllabus from secondary school, polytechnic, college of education, university and other tertiary educational curricula as it affects teaching of Chemistry and related sciences. Oghifo, who lamented the falling standard of the teaching of science subjects particularly Chemistry, in the country, blamed the trend on the non-accreditation of science teachers and inadequate or non-existent utilisation of adequate practical teaching aids, such as laboratories.
