Anti Saraki senators plot to impeach him

On Friday members of the Senate Unity Forum tried to convert senators loyal to the Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki to have him impeached and change the leadership of the Senate.

It was learnt that the SUF members, who contacted the pro-Saraki senators, based their argument on the ongoing trial of the Senate President at the Code of Conduct Tribunal and according to Punch, it seems they have been able to get the support of 12 pro-Saraki senators, mainly from the Peoples Democratic Party members.

It was gathered that senators who supported Lawan’s bid had allegedly met with some All Progressives Congress leaders on the need to remove Saraki and that they had started the meeting with the leaders shortly after the Senate went on recess.

A member of the group from the South-West geopolitical zone, who also craved anonymity, confirmed said that they have started reaching out to their colleagues who had joined the camp of Saraki.

He said:
“We know that getting the required figure to carry out an impeachment at the moment would be a herculean task but honestly we hope to achieve it very soon. Already there has been a serious move to get our former party members who are with Saraki now back to our camp.
“I can also confirm to you that we have the support of about 12 Peoples Democratic Party senators who are ready to support any move against Saraki. Don’t forget that some ranking PDP senators are still aggrieved over the emergence of freshers as their principal officers.”
Another source said:
“We learnt that the like minds senators are already working on some of their supporters in the PDP camp to reject the ministerial list by refusing to screen them but we are also ready for them. I won’t disclose our strategy for now.”

Saraki refutes claims of dumping party

Senate President, Bukola Saraki has refuted claims that he's dumping his party as a result of his current predicament.

Saraki made this known in the wee hours of Sunday, September 20, 2015 via his verified Twitter handle, @bukolasaraki following mixed reactions that trailed the removal of his party’s name from his bio.
The account which used to carry the phrase, “member of the APC”, as part of his info in the bio, became the subject of discourse after the phrase was removed from the Senate President's bio.

Saraki, however took out time to douse tension and erase doubt of his dedication to the political party witha tweet saying, “I remain a card carrying member of my dear party. But I’m also honoured to serve as Senate President of all Senators.”Saraki also used the opportunity to pen a tribute to the late HID Awolowo, who passed away on Saturday, September 19, 2015 afternoon.

APC in search for Mimiko’s successor

Although Peoples Democratic Party’s Governor Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State still has up to 2017 to occupy his plum office, Assistant Editor, Dare Odufowokan, reports that All Progressives Congress (APC) may have concluded plans to commence an early preparation and search for the right candidate to take over Mimiko’s job

Although Governor Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State is not billed to vacate his current office until February 2017, the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) in the sunshine state appears to have commenced the process of ensuring that it produces the next occupier of Alagbaka Government House.
We gathered that APC’s preparation for the next governorship election in the state started immediately after the last general election. Following its surprise defeat by the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the State Assembly elections, in spite of its earlier victory at the Presidential and National Assembly elections, leaders of the APC in Ondo State saw the need to start the race to the Government House early if it must oust Mimiko and the PDP in 2017.

It would be recalled that the APC won both the presidential election and majority of seats in the Senate and House of Representatives in Ondo State duMimikoring the last general election. Specifically, the party won three out of the three senatorial seats and five out of nine House of Representatives seats in the state.

But the ruling PDP surprisingly recovered from the shock of its earlier defeat and beat the APC in the State Assembly elections. The APC could only manage to clinch five state constituencies while Governor Mimiko’s PDP cleared the remaining 19 seats to retain control of the 24-member Assembly.

According to Chief Collins Adebayo, the party, startled by the unexpected recovery of the ruling party, set out to find out reasons for the development and how to forestall such in future.Adebayo, a Chieftain of the APC in Akure, said finding by the committee saddled with the task of unraveling the sudden decline in the fortune of the party at the last election in the state, prompted the leadership of the party to urge its members towards an early start in the race to the 2016 gubernatorial contest.

“We realised that the Mimiko-led administration have been around for a long time and they have huge capacity to deceive the people with mind blowing propaganda. That was what happened during the last State Assembly election and we see the need to forestall a repeat.

Apart from that, two years is a very short time in politics. Before you know it, the election will happen on us and we don’t want to be caught unaware. We are resolute in our determination to free Ondo State from the shackles of this oppressive administration,” he explained.

Intensive membership drive

Consequently, the APC in Ondo State has commenced what it called the Continuous Membership Registration (CMR) exercise in all the 18 local government areas of the state. According to Adebayo, the exercise, now in its second month, is a huge success.

“If we had doubt about how ready the people of the state are for the good change they are seeing all over the country, this membership registration exercise erased such doubt. You need to see how eager the people are to join our party. With this, the PDP will soon become past tense in Ondo politics,” he said.

A statement issued by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Abayomi Adesanya, said “the Continuous Membership Registration (CMR) was informed by the influx and exodus of politicians and professionals from the LP, PDP, AD and other political parties to the APC. The defectors have realised that APC will offer a purposeful, peoples’ government in the state”.

“We assure all members of our party, (APC), especially intending defectors, of a level playing field and equal opportunities for all aspirants. One man will not decide all candidates for all political offices like the narrative of the embattled LP. Our party would conduct primary elections for all political offices according to the party’s guidelines.

“We are all indigenes of Ondo State, and the reality of status quo in the state has put the task on all indigenes of our dear state to salvage it from this bad and inept leadership.”

Defection galore

And it appears the party is already reaping from its early moves as hundreds of leading PDP members across the state continue to defect to the APC. Recently, scores of PDP chieftains in the oil-producing Ilaje Local Council Area joined the APC.

Led by Prince Glory Okuntade, the defectors said they were leaving PDP, which they described as Egypt because of the mismanagement that they alleged the party has subjected the country to for the past 16 years it had been in the saddle.

Aside Okuntade, other defectors included former political and party office holders, including Messrs Timi Olowofoyeku, Dele Asogbon, Ademibo Okuntade, Festus Ademuwagun, Chief Ebini Idowu and Oronla Adebanjo.

Okuntade, who spoke on behalf of others, said they have nothing to show their teeming supporters in the coastal area as evidences of the development that their membership of PDP had brought to them.

Former National Legal Adviser of the PDP and its governorship candidate in the 2012 election, Chief Olusola Oke, who earlier defected to the APC, while receiving the defectors, said the time has come for all Ilaje sons and daughters to dump the PDP which has brought untold hardship to the people in the country.

“The change that has taken over Nigeria will come to Ondo State. This is the time for change in Ondo State. It is not good for this state to be in opposition to the federal government. We must be in tandem with the government at the centre. We want to take over the government both at the state and local government levels,” he said.

Speaking in similar veins, another PDP defector and a former commissioner in the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Benson Enikuomehin, said the structures of PDP in the local government and state are collapsing as its former leaders are leaving for the APC.

A former special adviser to Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun State on Environmental Sanitation, who is from Ondo State, Bola Illori, expressed his optimism that with its determination and preparation, the APC will win the next governorship election in the state.

Ilori confirmed that the party has started mobilising new members for the party as well as pacifying aggrieved members across the state. According to him, the APC is in a better position than before to chase Mimiko and the ruling PDP out of the Government House next year.

“I am very sure Mimiko will not produce his own successor. Anyway, there is no third time and we are set for the election. We are getting more people on our side every day; we are winning the traditional institution, winning the social institution and we are active and ready. The momentum of change is heavy in Ondo and for that we are quite sure that we are set to win. It is over for PDP in Ondo, if you look at Ondo town where the governor hails from, you will know that PDP is no more popular,” he said.

Governorship hopefuls emerging

Already, aspirants interested in vying for the governorship ticket of the party are emerging. Amongst them is the senator representing Ondo North in the National Assembly, Prof. Ajayi Boroffice. The second term senator also vied for the ticket in 2012. He is from the Akoko axis of Ondo North Senatorial District.

Close sources told that in line with the party’s preference for early preparations towards the election, Boroffice would soon announce his intention to contest the governorship seat. “He is serious and ready to go all the way with his governorship ambition,” an aide of the senator said.

Other APC chieftains allegedly interested in the governorship ticket are Mr. Isaac Kekemeke, the current State Chairman of the party, Senator Tayo Alasoadura, who currently represents the Ondo Central Senatorial District and Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu, who was the party’s candidate in the 2012 governorship election.

Party sources also added that more party chieftains, especially amongst the defectors, are also eyeing the ticket. Leading the pack, according to findings by The Nation, is Chief Sola Oke, the PDP governorship candidate in the 2012 gubernatorial contest.

Oke, who is from Ondo South Senatorial District is banking on the party’s promise of a level playing ground for all aspirants as he enters into the race for the ticket. “Oke is the man who can defeat Mimiko and the PDP. He is the man APC need to effect change in Ondo,” an associate of the former PDP National Legal Adviser said.

Senators hold emergency meeting over Saraki/Code of Conduct issue

About 50 Senators cutting across different political parties in the senate, convened an emergency meeting in Abuja yesterday September 19th where they discussed the Code of Conduct Tribunal's invitation to Senate President Bukola Saraki over his alleged false declaration of assets.

Daily Trust reports that the senators at the meeting exonerated President Buhari of being behind the current crisis facing the senate President but accused "a cabal" within the presidency who they say is instigating the government institutions against Senate President Saraki.

Rising from the meeting which lasted for about 4 hours with some senators joining the meeting via telephone, the convener of the meeting, Senator Bala Ibn Na’Allah said they had unanimously resolved to support the anti-corruption war of President Buhari and also to deal decisively with the cabal
“We have resolved to use all available powers under the constitution to ensure that no cabal exists and run the government on behalf of Buhari and we have also resolved to deal decisively with the cabal,” he said.
Also another senator who spoke on the condition of anonymity after the meeting said
"Our colleagues were angry at the beginning of the meeting because they were initially suspecting that the President has hand in the trial of Saraki. But after heated debate, they understood that Buhari was not responsible for it. One of our colleagues present at the meeting suggested that the Senate should reconvene on Monday [tomorrow] in order to address the challenge. His suggestion, however, did not see the light of day as we resolved to use other channels to address the challenge.”.

Saraki distances self from APC

Nigerian users on Twitter, on Saturday, expressed surprise at the removal of the All Progressives Congress’ name from the official profile page of the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki.According to some users, the Senate President’s verified Twitter biography previously read, in part, “Member of the APC.”

However, when our correspondent visited the page, it simply read, “Senate President and Chairman of the 8th National Assembly. Committed to Transparency and Accountability.”One user, Am Human No Labels, said, “Sir, are you no longer a member of the ruling party? I can’t find APC on your bio anymore.”In the same vein, @olufemisp wrote, “I knew it was when @bukolasaraki deleted the “APC” that proudly adorned his bio. This Saraki war will consume the party.”

Another user, AS Aruwa, said, “I just noticed that @bukolasaraki has deleted ‘Member of the APC’ from his bio. Someone is about to decamp?”Maryam Abubakar also asked, “Now that the ‘APC’ on Bukola Saraki’s Twitter bio is gone, what should we expect?”

“Why is the APC on your bio gone sir?” @RichieDectector asked, while Ayokunle Odekunle wrote, “@BukolaSaraki removes the ‘APC’ from his bio. It gets more interesting.”

Afolabi Ajiboro also said, “@ogundamisi have you noticed that @bukolasaraki has removed APC from his bio on Twitter? Minutes later the PDP released statement defending him.”

The Senate President did not respond to the controversy on Twitter.

However, the Special Adviser to the Senate President on Media, Mr. Yusuph Olaniyonu, said, “It is not a new development. The party logo was there during the elections and we took it off after the elections about a month ago.”Meanwhile, the Force Headquarters on Saturday said it was still waiting for the bench warrant issued by the Code of Conduct Tribunal for the arrest of the Senate President. The Force Public Relations Officer, Olabisi Kolawole, said the police had yet to get the court order as of Saturday when our correspondent inquired about the delay in the execution of the arrest warrant.

Kolawole explained that the police cannot arrest Saraki without the court order.
“We have not received the bench warrant till now (Saturday) and until we get the court order, we cannot execute it,” she said over the phone.Justice Danladi Umar of the Code of Conduct Tribunal had on Friday in Abuja ordered a bench warrant against Saraki for failing to appear before the court to answer charges over alleged false declaration of assets. The judge specifically ordered the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Solomon Arase, or other security agencies to arrest Saraki and produce him in court on Monday to take plea in the 13-count charge slammed on him by the Federal Government.

But Saraki’s lead counsel and former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mr. Joseph Daudu, said he had filed an appeal asking the court to set aside the ruling dated September 18, 2015.Daudu said the trial judge erred in law and “acted without jurisdiction by countenancing and assuming jurisdiction over the criminal trial/prosecution of the accused/appellant at the Code of Conduct Tribunal for a charge, which is being challenged at the FHC, Abuja in suit No: FHC/ABJ/CS/775/2015 between Dr. Olubukola Abubakar Saraki vs Ministry of Justice and three others and in disobedience of the order of the FHC, Abuja Division dated September 17, 2015.”

He averred that it was not necessary for his client to be present in court since the accused had filed an application challenging the jurisdiction of the tribunal to adjudicate on the charge brought before it.

The Federal Government had on September 11 filed 13 charges against Saraki before the CCT and the case was fixed for Friday for his arraignment, but the accused failed to appear in court.

According to the suit filed at the CCT, allegations against Saraki include failure to declare property on Plot 2A, Glover Road, Ikoyi, Lagos; failure to declare property on No 1, Tagus Street, Maitama, Abuja (Plot 2482, Cadastral Zone A06, Abuja) and failure to declare property No 3, Tagus Street, Maitama, Abuja (Plot 2481, Cadastral Properties Limited).

Buhari desperate to remove Saraki — PDP

The opposition Peoples Democratic Party on Saturday accused the President Muhammadu Buhari-led APC administration of despotism and desperation to remove Senate President Bukola Saraki.

The PDP said the Buhari administration had continued to rule the country without a constitutional component of a cabinet, persistent abuse of power as well as undermining democratic institutions.

National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Mr. Olisa Metuh, who said this in a statement in Abuja, also accused the Buhari administration of intolerance, particularly over the treatment being meted out to Saraki.

According to the PDP, the administration has invaded a state Government House and personal houses and injected confusion into the judiciary.

The party expressed worry over what it called the “relentless onslaught against democratic institutions.” It said it was especially worried by “the growing tension trailing the quest to annex the National Assembly; for which the Presidency had since vowed not to recognise the current Senate leadership, in total disdain to the independence of the legislature and the principle of separation of powers.”

The PDP also described President Buhari’s condemnation of the recent coup in Burkina Faso as a mockery of reasoning.

Metuh said, “Ordinarily, the intra-party squabbles within the APC regarding leadership positions in the Senate is not necessarily our concern.

“Also, we are not interested in whether Senate President Bukola Saraki ran for the APC presidential ticket against President Muhammadu Buhari; or whether he ran for the Senate presidency against the advice of the President and his party.

“Our concerns here are the prevailing executive intolerance, the undermining of the institution of the National Assembly and the overall threat to the survival of our democracy.”

The party said it took note of the dangerous trend because the Presidency and the APC had not hidden their aversion to the election of Senators Bukola Saraki and Ike Ekweremadu as Senate President and Deputy Senate President, respectively.

The PDP spokesperson also said what was happening was part of a larger script to commence a major onslaught against federal lawmakers perceived to hold divergent views to those of the Presidency, irrespective of party affiliations, a situation that would ensure a subdued legislature.

The APC on its part accused the PDP of openly launching a counter-offensive against the determined efforts of the Buhari administration to rid the country of impunity and corruption, but warned that the opposition party will fail in its attempt to take Nigerians back to Egypt.

Its spokesman, Mr. Lai Mohammed, said, “With its statement that is nothing but an unabashed support for impunity and corruption, as well as its major actors, the PDP has now confirmed itself as the official ‘poster boy’ for corruption in Nigeria.”

APC said the long-winding sophistry about the rule of law, democracy and personal freedoms is aimed at couching the PDP’s abhorrence and disdain for the fight against corruption in democratic clichés, especially now that the battle is gradually hitting the PDP where it hurts.

The APC said, the persistent onslaught against the Buhari administration was neither altruistic nor informed by any belief in higher values, “because the allegations of corruption hanging on Metuh’s neck, from within his own party, is a clear indication that he is mortally afraid that the wind will soon blow hard enough to expose the fowl’s rump’’.

“Neither the PDP as a party nor its spokesman have the moral authority to condemn anyone, least of all a President that is working hard to rescue Nigeria from the abyss to which it has been plunged by the former ruling party.

“For the PDP to brush aside the latest revelation that a government it sired could not account for $700 million from the Sovereign Wealth Fund (SWF), or the fact that the party could not account for billions of Naira in its own campaign funds, and then launch a frontal attack against a reformist government, is the height of shamelessness.

“For the ethically-challenged spokesman of the same morally-deficient party to continue to spew trash under the guise of opposition politics is totally provocative and absolutely unacceptable. Worse still, the lack of focus in the labyrinthine statements being issued by the opposition party has confirmed the prescience of the APC’s offer to the PDP’s spokesman to take a crash course in how to speak for the opposition.’’

Saraki loyalists hire 1500 Islamic clerics

Supporters and loyalists of the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki have engaged in vigil and fasting.

One of the conveners of the prayers, Mr. Kayode Yusuf, who is popularly called ‘Maja,’ in an interview with our correspondent in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital on Saturday, said prayer sessions were being held all over the state, especially in the Ilorin motropolis.

He said he had mobilised over 500 Muslim clerics while about 1,000, including the Chief Iman of Ilorin, Mohammad Solihu were praying in different areas in the state for Saraki’s victory.

“Yusuf, who is the convener of ‘Maja Elders Forum’, called on President Buhari to intervene and prevent the polity from being over-heated.

He expressed the hope that Saraki’s travail would soon be over.

Yusuf said, “We in Kwara are powerless. The only thing we can do is to support him (Saraki) with prayers. We have no money, soldiers, police or any other security apparatus. We are just ordinary citizens of Kwara and Nigeria. But we in Kwara, especially in Ilorin, believe in the power of prayers.

“All of us in Ilorin, including the Chief Imam of Ilorin, are involved in the prayers. Saraki is our leader. He must not come down. Within the short time that he was elevated as the Senate President, we know what we have benefited from him.

“I have mobilised more than 500 Imans and over 1,000 others are praying in different areas. They have been praying and fasting. Even the women are praying for him. Saraki is our benefactor. Even the uneducated do not want anything to happen to Bukola Saraki. They are not sleeping but are also praying. The prayers will last till Saraki’s ordeal is over.”

In a related development, a coalition of civil society organisations under the aegis of Heritage Centre and the National Association of Nigerian Students have threatened to lead mass protests to foreign embassies in Abuja to protest alleged political vendetta being carried out against the Senate President.

Police -No arrest warrant for Saraki

In regards to the controversy generated by the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) order for the arrest of Senate President Bukola Saraki, the police yesterday said they haven't received any order to that effect.
“I am yet to see one”, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Solomon Arase, said.
The CCT, headed by Justice Danladi Umar, had, in a ruling on Friday, ordered the IGP and other security agencies to arrest Saraki and produce him before Monday to face a 13-count charge bordering on corruption and false declaration of assets.  The order and subsequent bench warrant followed Saraki’s failure to appear before the tribunal for arraignment.

“The police are yet to receive the Code of Conduct Tribunal bench warrant”, ordering the Senate President’s arrest, a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), ACP Adebisi  Kolawole, also said, yesterday.

African Union suspends Burkina Faso from organization

The African Union has suspended Burkina Faso over Thursday's military coup. The AU said sanctions would be imposed if members of the presidential guard, who staged the coup do not release members of the interim government which includes the interim president, Michel Kafondo.

The presidents of Benin and Senegal are in the city for talks with the coup leader. Meanwhile Pres. Buhari has condemned the coup in Burkina Faso. Below is a press statement from the presidency..
President Muhammadu Buhari and the Federal Government of Nigeria unreservedly condemn Wednesday's detention of the Interim President, the Prime Minister and other ministers of the transitional government of Burkina Faso in an apparent coup d'etat.

President Buhari and Nigeria align with ECOWAS, the African Union and the United Nations in rejecting the brazen contravention of the constitution and transitional charter of Burkina Faso by elements of the Presidential Guard under the leadership of General Gilbert Diendere.
President Buhari and Nigeria urge the Defense and Security Forces of Burkina Faso to keep faith with the agreed transitional programme for the return of the country to full democratic rule after elections, which were due to be held in the country on October 11, in support of which Nigeria has donated 20 pick-up vans to the National Electoral Commission of Burkina Faso.

While welcoming the news that the Interim President, Mr. Michel Kafando has now been freed, President Buhari and Nigeria also demand the immediate release of Prime Minister Isaac Zida and other detained ministers.
Nigeria will give the fullest possible support to ongoing efforts by the ECOWAS mediatory team of President Macky Sall of Senegal and President Boni Yayi of Benin Republic to quickly restore Burkina Faso to the path of order, democracy and constitutionalism.
The President urges the people of Burkina Faso to remain calm and steadfast in support of the transitional order, elections and democratic governance with the full assurance that Nigeria, ECOWAS and the international community will uphold their right to peace, freedom, democracy and good governance.

Obasanjo and Tinubu reportedly at war over Ministerial List nominees

Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo and the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu are reportedly at war over President Muhammadu Buhari’s ministerial nominees.
According to New Telegraph, the trouble started when Tinubu nominated former Lagos State Commissioner for Finance, Wale Edun as Finance Minister to fill the Ogun State slot.

Obasanjo is said to have subsequently called the APC leader and warned him against choosing Edun for Ogun when his work and career were rooted in Lagos State.
According to sources, the former president’s recent visits to Buhari were based on his nominations for the ministerial list.

According to New Telegraph, some of Obasanjo’s nominees include: former Osun State Governor, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola (Osun); former Governor of Ekiti State and now the Deputy National Chairman (South) of the APC, Chief Segun Oni (Ekiti); Mustapha (Ogun); former Minister of Education, Mrs. Oby Ezekwesili and former Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Professor Chukwuma Soludo.
“Tinubu and Akande’s visit to President Buhari on September 9 was an impromptu meeting. An influential official in the presidency told them of Obasanjo’s surreptitious moves to corner the ministerial nominees from the South-West. This is why the two leaders visited,” a source said.

Obasanjo visited Buhari on September 8 while Tinubu visited the president on September 9. The APC leader however denied that his visit to Buhari was in connection with the president’s ministerial list.
Buhari is set to name his ministers before September 30 despite recently saying that ministers are just noisemakers like politicians.

Ex Senate leader, Ndoma-Egba resigns from PDP

A former leader of the Senate, Victor Ndoma-Egba (SAN), has resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party. Ndoma-Egba tendered his resignation to the PDP Chairman in his Akparabong Ward of Ikom Local Government Area of Cross River State yesterday September 16th.

He cited inconsistency in PDP's policy as one of his reasons for resigning from the party. His resignation letter in part reads “I returned to politics to pursue certain ideals and values, to contribute towards strengthening democracy, to give a voice to my people, a people who have been most kind and generous to me. Before, the PDP was strong in Cross River State because it offered members an atmosphere and opportunity for self expression within its confines.

Today, those values that underline democracy have totally become strange to the party. I, therefore, resign my membership of the PDP forthwith and urge you to take the necessary steps to reflect this on your records,”.
