Here goes the Leucistic pretty snake lady. The Leucistic Texas Rat Snake is a lovely lady in white. It gets its coloring and the "leucistic" element of its name from a condition that results in a lack of all pigmentation, rather than just melanin which appears in albinism. This is why its eyes are of normal color. Texas Rat Snakes are found in Texas as well as in Arizona and Louisiana. They are non venomous!

Six year old boy burnt to death in Lagos fire

Follow @NaijaTalkative

A six-year-old boy was burnt to death in a fire that engulfed a building in Iyana-Ifako area of Gbagada Lagos, Tuesday night.

The deceased, identified simply as Abbey, was said to have been sleeping when the incident occurred.

Two of his elder brothers were said to have been rescued by sympathisers. The fire affected 10 rooms in the building located at 3, Ogunde Street, off Somori, Iyana-Ifako.

The cause of the fire, said to have started at 9p.m., could not be ascertained.

While occupants of the buildings scampered from their respective apartments for safety, eyewitnesses said shouts for help from some children in one of the rooms were heard.

Some of the sympathisers said to have gone for rescue mission, discovered that the door was locked.

One of the eyewitnesses said: “Their parents locked them inside and went out. Nobody knew where they went to. The door was forced opened and two of them rescued, though one of them was slightly burnt.

“It was while they got outside that the rescued children said their brother was still inside. By then the fire had engulfed the whole building and nobody could go in again.”

The Director, Lagos State Fire Service, Mr. Rasaq Fadipe, said fire trucks from Ilupeju and Ikeja responded to the distress call. He said the charred remains of the six-year-old boy was recovered.

ASUU: Nigerian government is deaf and dumb - ASUU

Follow @NaijaTalkative

Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities (ASUU) has condemned the attitude of the Federal Government towards the strike action embarked upon by the universities teachers saying that if the government has not defaulted in the implementation of the agreement reached and signed with the union, there would not have been a strike action.

ASUU Chairman, University of Ibadan Chapter, (UI) in an exclusive interview said, “It is unfortunate the situation we have found ourselves in this country. When we started this strike action, we felt we are dealing with a responsible and responsive government. We felt this is a government that would want to do that which is the yearning of the people. We felt this is a government that will see the need to quickly address issues that have led us to the strike. It is a pity that we have been talking to deaf and dumb government. This is the fourth month and this government is not yielding to the wishes of Nigerians which is to fund public universities appropriately.”

He continued, “It is not a nice story that Nigeria’s universities have been shut for four months and the government is not putting in serious efforts to making sure that the problems are addressed. It is really sad.”

Ajiboye who noted that the nation’s universities cannot continue to run the way they are presently, said without the urgent intervention of the government to arrest the rots that have accumulated over years, the universities cannot produce the expected results.

The ASUU leader stated that the union has refused to shift ground so that public universities could be protected for the children of the poor to have access to the university education and have universities to go.

Lamenting how the government has killed both primary and secondary schools in the country, he appealed that efforts should be put in place to sustain public tertiary institutions stressing, “the private universities is unaffordable for the poor.

The lowest school fee in a private university is N700, 000. Where can parents that are on minimum wage of N18, 000 get such amount of money to send their children to such university?”

Ajiboye also condemned the attempt of the government to rubbish the personality of Deacon Gamaliel Onosode and other eminent Nigerian personalities who negotiated with the ASUU to produce the 2009 agreement.

128 people killed in Yobe Boko Haram attack

Follow @NaijaTalkative

GORE gory details of last week’s Boko Haram attacks on Damaturu, the Yobe State capital, emerged yesterday. No fewer than 128 people were killed, it was learnt.
Military and hospital reports indicated to Associated Press (AP) that 23 soldiers, eight policemen and 95 insurgents were killed in the five-hour long battle between the Islamic extremists and troops.
There has been no specific figure given by the military on the casualty , but the latest findings showed that the militants had a strong hand and caught troops by surprise.
The attack came after a lull and almost six months after the federal government imposed a state of emergency in Yobe along with Borno and Adamawa states.
Reporters saw that the extremists set ablaze four police command posts and an army barracks where they looted vehicles and weapons.
Police and witnesses said at least two civilians died — a man believed killed by the insurgents and a civil servant shot by soldiers for breaking the curfew.
Also yesterday, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees UNHCR) urged neigbouring countries to keep their borders open for Nigerians fleeing the escalating violence and who may be in need of international protection.
The Geneva-based agency also advised states against forced return of people to the region.
Spokesperson Dan McNorton told reporters: “Our recommendations are contained in a newly issued Return Advisory, which seeks to ensure that humanitarian and asylum principles are upheld in light of the worsening security situation in northeastern Nigeria.

LAGOS: Houswife who totured 14-year old housekeeper to death jailed for 10 years

Follow @NaijaTalkative

An Ikeja High Court, yesterday, sentenced a 27-year-old woman, Chiamaka Nnajiofor, to 10 years imprisonment for her culpability in the death of her housekeeper, Oliver Arakwe.
Justice Lateefat Okunnu convicted Nnajiofor for manslaughter instead of the charge of murder preferred against her. The sentence is to commence from September 22, 2011, when she was first arraigned.
Nnajiofor and her husband, Elochukwu, 41, were charged to court by the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecution, DPP, for murder.
According to the DPP, the couple tortured 14-year-old Arakwe to death on August 17, 2010 at 81, Femi Tella Street, Ago Palace, Okota, a Lagos suburb.
The couple had pleaded not guilty to the charge of murder.
Okunnu ruled: “There is nothing to show that he was part of the flogging his wife instigated that day, and available evidence indicated that he was not in the apartment when it happened.
“The prosecution also failed to prove the charge of murder against Chiamaka beyond reasonable doubts.
“Oliver was a severely malnourished boy and the beating of the boy with a belt would have had a lesser effect on a normal 14-year-old.
“It is on this basis that I find Chiamaka, the first defendant, not guilty of murder. I find her guilty of manslaughter. The second defendant, Elochukwu, is discharged and acquitted.

Chris Brown jailed in Washington for assault

Follow @NaijaTalkative

Police said they arrested pop music star Chris Brown early Sunday and charged him with felony assault after a violent altercation outside a downtown Washington hotel.

Police spokesman Anthony Clay told AFP that Brown was arrested “around 4:25 this morning (0825 GMT) in front of the W Hotel,” a chic establishment near the White House.
Brown, along with a male companion, got into an altercation with a third man, and the incident became violent, according to police.

Brown, 24, and his companion “were arrested and charged with a felony assault. A victim was taken to the hospital and treated for his injuries,” the police spokesman said, adding that the beating victim “had injuries to his face.”

“They are still in our custody,” Clay said of the pop star and his friend, who was described by US media as the singer’s bodyguard.

Brown is the ex-boyfriend of pop singer Rihanna, with whom he has had a tempestuous on-again, off-again relationship.

He was arrested in February 2009 after getting involved in a physical confrontation with Rihanna that left her with a bruised and battered face.

He was required, after pleading guilty in court to the assault, to take part in domestic violence counseling and sentenced to five years’ probation and community service.

Properties which may serve as stumbling block to the passage of the road are hereby being pulled down. Some cut into half, others completely laid down flat (roadside shops especially).
The project which many consider as a good stride was condemned by some who lost their properties or had them in a bad shape.

No Retreat, No Surrender; FG deceives Nigerians - ASUU Leader

Follow @NaijaTalkative

Clement Chup is the zonal coordinator of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in Abuja. , in this interview, hints that there is no end in sight to the four months old strike by the university teachers which has kept students at home.

The Minister of Education recently said ASUU strike would be over in a few months. What is the
position of ASUU?

I may not be in a position to give you the official position of ASUU, it is the National President that would give you the official position, but I want to tell you that there is a lot of insincerity on the part of government and, because government has the machinery of propaganda at their disposal, they disseminate a lot of falsehood to the general public. We are not talking about what government wants to do; what we are talking about is the implementation of an agreement which was signed by government and our union. So what government should be explaining is the modality for the implementation; so far, government has not come out to say this is what we will do. Rather, what government is trying to do is to run away from the agreement and we cannot accept that because the agreement is binding. Government must be honorable and responsible and implement the agreement. To buttress their insincerity, government would claim, and they have been telling the general public, that they released N100 billion two months ago. Up till now that we are talking, one kobo has not been released to any university, that is to tell you how insincere government is. So when they say we would as from next year make budgetary provision for so so and so amount, the question we should be asking ourselves is , what was spelt out in the agreement, which we are insisting they should implement? They cannot even give you an answer. In as much as we painfully went into this strike and, in as much as we are painfully pursuing this strike, in as much as we want this strike to end, we cannot just end it without achieving the purpose for which we went on the strike. So, as long as government does not show any sincerity to implement the agreement, the strike continues.

Can you react to government’s allegation that ASUU is politicizing the strike?

Well, a thief always thinks that every other person is a thief; because they believe politics is all about falsehood, they think others are reasoning like them. But the question they should be asking is, does ASUU have basis for going on this strike? Let anyone of them come out and say no. Does the agreement exist and did the Federal Government sign the agreement? The answer is yes.

Why are they refusing to implement it? Like I said earlier, they have the machinery for propaganda at their disposal they can disseminate whatever false information they want and they think everybody is like them. We are a union of intellectuals we don’t just come out to say anything or do anything, we subject it to scrutiny. We cannot become like them; it was said even by government at the highest quarters, but you would recall they have not told us how, what manner of politics has come in and let Nigerians know. They said ASUU has been politicized. How? and it has been influenced by the opposition. The question we should ask is by which opposition. We look at them as politicians and all this claim is a tool by the Federal Government to blackmail us cheaply and we know they cannot succeed.

How many meetings have you had so far with the Federal Government and are the meetings on-going?

I prefer when you talk about meetings and discussions because there have been no negotiations going on but there are discussions, because you already have something to work with because when you have an agreement, it is a product of negotiation and it took us three years and I want to emphasise, three years, to arrive at that document called the 2009 agreement and, for you to arrive at an agreement, you must have made concessions. We have the document, it is for government to honour it.

We would not refuse any invitation by anybody. The Federal Government has been calling us for discussions and we have been going. So, as long as they call us we will go, probably they want to tell us how they are going to implement the agreement.

It was reported that the Federal Government has increased the N30 billion it released for earned allowance to N40 billion. Is this true?

The Federal Government didn’t consult us before they released the N30 billion. You see the insincerity? We were discussing how to implement the 2009 agreement and they simply went and released money to the universities, without any template, to cause further problems in the universities. So, if they have decided to add, and it was not part of the agreement, if they want to give universities award, they should go ahead.

If somebody wants to give you award, you won’t reject it, but we know that we have an agreement and you should implement the agreement and when you want to implement the agreement, you are supposed to carry us along.

Government is using this to blackmail us cheaply, and the next thing they would say is they have ‘released money, why won’t you call off the strike?’

We are not part of it and we have refused to participate in it and, in all the universities, you can ask, our members are not participating in the sharing of that money because it was not part of the agreement.

Public sympathy on the strike, what is ASUU doing about this?

We are taking that into consideration. You know one thing about public sympathy, it can easily change depending on circumstances, but what we are looking at is the fact of the matter and the truth on ground. Now if you look at it, people that are heroes historically were called rebels, even in the Bible, Jesus Christ was called a rebel, the people he was dying for were the ones shouting ‘crucify him’. ASUU stands for the truth to advance the cause of education in Nigeria. And also the cause of this country because by the time government becomes responsible, it will benefit not only education but also everybody. It is will be a stepping stone, then people will realize that government carries some responsibilities. For now, we are appealing to the public but we know we are fighting a just cause and we will continue. There are people who feel ASUU should call off the strike and then come back for negotiation?

There are no negotiations going on; so which negotiation are we going to allow or are we saying we should allow implementation?

Where was government when we were giving warnings? This is part of the insincerity by government we are talking about.

How many times did ASUU warn the Federal Government?

We wrote 53 letters since February 2012 and each of the letters was made public. There is none of our National Executive meetings we would not publish advertorial in newspapers and warnings constantly. We even visited some eminent Nigerians and urged them to talk to the Federal Government to honour the 2009 agreement.

We told them then we would eventually go on strike and it would not be good for anybody but they kept quiet; it is now they realize that there should be truce, truce for what?

All we want from the Federal Government is to tell ASUU how they are going to implement the 2009 agreement, that is all. Government cannot run away from the agreement; we must work based on the agreement.

But the Federal Government said it cannot implement some of the things in the agreement? It said the idea of releasing N400 billion per annum is not realistic?

Who signed it? Ask them. Looking at the kind of government we have in this country, only last week, the government said it was getting ready to bail out the aviation sector for the second time. They feel this sector is important because they fly;

But they have forgotten about most Nigerians that travel by road. Is it not Government money they are going to use? Where did they get the trillions they are going to use?

Nigeria is supposed to commence the operation of national carrier before the end of this year – that is more of a priority to them. Education is not. You see the outrageous expenditure for those in government. Does that give the impression that the nation doesn’t have money? A few days ago, the Central Bank came out to tell us that in nine months, the nation made over N6 trillion and our budget is just over N4 trillion. They shouldn’t come out with the falsehood that the nation cannot afford to implement some parts of the 2009 agreement.

Meanwhile, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation mid-wifed the memorandum of understanding that they are saying they cannot release, that is the insincerity we are talking about.

Is there end in sight to the four months old ASUU strike?

We don’t know, it is not for us to end it. When government is ready, we are ready.

What specifically does ASUU want the Federal Government to do?

We don’t want a fresh negotiation. When we wanted to go on strike, there was referendum in all our branches and they said until there is substantial evidence of implementation the 2009 agreement, we shall not suspend the strike. All we are saying is that the agreement should be implemented. There is nothing new about it, it is what we have been saying since the strike started and even before we went on strike. So let the Federal Government go on and implement the 2009 agreement. We cannot abrogate our agreement – on it we stand.

We are doing our best to give updates but you will agree with me that we are handicapped and we don’t have the quantum of resources that Federal Government has for propaganda. You will agree with me that is a challenge on its own. That is not to say that we are not doing our best trying to explain to Nigerians our situation.

The marriage hit the rocks three months ago, on the grounds of irreconcilable marital differences. There appears to be no going back, as Mike has chosen a new partner in the person of his artiste and former wife of Rasqie, Monique Rasqie.

Monique Rasqie, the crooner of popular single entitled, Oti Sure Ju is equally signed on to Mike’s Spaghetti Records, and is one of the artistes he is promoting now.

However, his failed marriage with Viven has been under the carpet, but the female dreadlock praise singer has in various ways on her Facebook page insinuated the pains she has felt, which elaborates the issue of her marital crisis. Few of the posts read:

Six killed by tanker explosion in Kaduna

Follow @NaijaTalkative

Six persons were killed on Friday night in a fire from a tanker explosion in Maraban Jos, Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the Federal Road Maintenance Agency had constructed a trailer park at the Maraban Jos axis of the Kaduna-Zaria expressway to reduce the high rate of fires caused by petrol tankers and accidents caused by articulated trucks parked along the road.

Alhaji Abdullahi Kwarau, the Chairman of Igabi Local Government Council, said the accident, which occurred on Friday night, involved two fuel-laden tankers.

He appealed to the state government to expedite action on the construction of more trailer parks on major roads in the state to avoid a recurrence of such accidents.

Governor Mukhtar Yero of Kaduna State, who condoled with the families of those who died in the accident, urged drivers, particularly those of petrol tankers, to be extra vigilant while driving or parking their vehicles.

He assured the people that efforts were underway to ensure the timely completion of new trailer parks being constructed in Igabi, Kagarko and Birnin Gwari local government areas.

Yero said the state government was also collaborating with FERMA to ensure the speedy completion of ongoing road projects to forestall recurring accidents on the major roads.

3-year old dies while hugging electrocuted mom in Lagos

Follow @NaijaTalkative

October 16, the day after Muslim brothers and sisters celebrated Sallah, the unexpected shook the ears at Oniwaya Junction, Agege, Lagos, as a high tension cable electrocuted four people in the area.

A woman, identified as Mrs. Oluwajedalo but popularly called Iya Fathia, survived the electrocution but lost his three-year-old son, Ayomide, who ran towards her and embraced her as electric shock overtook her.

There is a transformer located at Oniwaya Junction. House no 88 is just two houses away from the transformer.

A resident of the house, Mr. James Eboh, promptly pointed to a paper on a wall, a poster of the four victims of the electrocution – Ayomide Oluwajedalo (3), Sunday Hisaun (25), Samson Akinrinsoye (25) and Matthew (37).

Eboh shook his head and said the three-year-old victim should not have died.

He said, “The incident occurred around 8pm. There was a spark on the transformer over there. As we heard the spark, everybody scampered for safety because it had happened before.

“A cable detached from the transformer as the spark went off. It fell on this shop here (in the front of No 88). Iya Fathia moved towards the shop to warn the shop owner, who was inside at the time. But she stepped on a metal on which the shop was built.
